About the course
This self-paced course by OCB has been developed by MSF Italy and is open to all MSF staff interested in the topic of intercultural mediation. It is particularly addressed to Intercultural Mediators (ICMs) and to all MSF staff who work with ICMs, either directly or indirectly. The course, which consists of four modules, aims to provide an overview of the subject, offering guidance and insights into intercultural mediation and the role of ICMs within MSF. The modules combine various learning methods, including reading materials, animations, scenarios, and quizzes.
Target audience
This course is for the Intercultural Mediators (ICMs) and to all MSF staff who work with ICMs.
Validation
This course is validated by MSF OCB.
Duration
Participants are expected to commit 2h of their time.
Learning objectives
At the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Define intercultural mediation in healthcare and its purpose.
- Describe the role, responsibilities, and guiding principles of an Intercultural Mediator (ICM).
- Interpret communication between care providers and service users with cultural sensitivity. - Explain MSF’s three components of intercultural mediation: practical-directive, linguistic-communicative, and psychosocial.
- Identify common challenges in intercultural communication, including cultural and linguistic barriers.
- Recognize verbal, non-verbal, and paraverbal elements in cross-cultural communication.
- Distinguish between laws, morality, and deontology, and how they apply professionally.
- Identify ethical dilemmas and outline strategies to address them.
- Highlight the importance of collaboration between ICMs and care providers.
- Apply strategies for effective communication and consultation in triadic (‘trialogue’) settings.

Methodology
During this course learners will have to tackle various tasks and scenarios presented to them using a combination of multimedia materials (video, audio, text, animations) and complete quizzes.
Evaluation
Throughout the modules, you will have quizzes that will help you assess yourself.
Certification
After successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate, and a digital badge awarded by MSF OCB.
