About the course

This training is divided into two parts: Budget Elaboration and Budget Monitoring. Participants will gain the skills needed to create detailed, actionable budgets and monitor them effectively. The training emphasizes collaboration, deviation management, and resource optimization to align with project objectives.

  • Individuals new to budgeting process or those looking to refine their knowledge of MSF OCBA’s financial planning methods.

Learning objectives

Budget elaboration

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize parts and timeline of the budget process in MSF.
  • List and describe the finance manager’s involvement in the budget process.
  • Explain the steps preceding budget elaboration, including objectives, expected results, activities, resources, and the final budget.
  • Identify sources of data for quantifying activities and translating them into a budget.
  • Address common challenges in the budgeting process and provide solutions.

Budget Monitoring

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the budget monitoring process (what, when, who, how).
  • Identify roles and responsibilities in budget monitoring.
  • Lead budget monitoring meetings and address deviations.
  • Manage out-of-budget changes.

Duration

The training is designed for self-paced learning and each chapter can be completed in approximately 3 or 4 hours, depending on the learner’s space.

Methodology

The training uses a self-paced, online learning format with a mix of instructional content, interactive activities (such as multiple-choice questions and flashcards), and real-world examples to enhance understanding. Learners will engage with materials explaining the budgeting process, followed by practical activities designed to apply the concepts learned. There are opportunities for feedback and comparison with solutions for different tasks.
