About the course

The First Departure Preparation for Medical Profiles aims to best prepare participants for their first mission with MSF. 

It introduces participants to certain contexts, concepts and activities and provides the necessary tools to make them feel comfortable in their first assignment. It insists on multidisciplinary work in order to ensure quality care centered on our target populations.

Language : English but also available in French under the name "PPDM - OCP (version Française)".

Target audience

The participants are medical and paramedical staff (doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists...) identified for a first mission departure within 3 months.

Learning objectives

To enable first mission medical and paramedical staff to find their way around MSF activities, teams and work environment and to prepare them to work as a team in the field.

At the end of the training the participants will be able to: 

  • Explain their roles and responsibilities as medical supervisors and organize teams, 
  • To present the main medical activities by following an adapted patient flow, articulated at the community level, health centers and hospitals, taking into account referral systems, 
  • Describe transversal activities and services, 
  • To cite the infection prevention and control actions involving all staff, patients and caregivers,
  • Understand their involvement in data management to ensure proper interpretation of indicators in order to best adapt our activities and ensure quality of care,
  • Describe the procedures to follow when an epidemic occurs and understand their responsibility within the multidisciplinary team,
  • To identify how an MSF pharmacy works, the tools and resource people,
  • Consider the complexicity of the contexts encountered and identify the resources available (for themselves and our target audiences) to ensure continuity of care

The e-learning follows a common thread describing the progress of a first mission from the proposal of the mission to the return from the field. 

The modules are structured as follows: 

  • Departure for the mission : The medical team, its hierarchical and functional links, the communication circuits, the transversal roles of the medical staff (training, team management).
  • 1st month of the mission : Briefings, nutritional programs and program monitoring
  • 2nd month of the mission : Mass casualty plan, surgery, pain management, Infection prevention and control, antibiotic-resistance,  transversal activities
  • 3rd month of the mission : Infectious diseases, vaccination and biomedical equipment
  • 4th month of the mission : Pharmacy management
  • 5th month of the mission : Sexual violence, medical abortions, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psycho-social support and finally the return from mission.

This course have interactives modules and ressources to consult. 

Evaluation 

This course doesn't have any knowledge check, you just need to finalised all the moodules. 

Certification

Badge awarded upon completion of all modules.
