Watsan Level 1 Course (ENGLISH)

About the Course

Access to water, hygiene and sanitation (WHS) has an important role in the prevention and control of a large number of diseases; furthermore, provision of safe water and sanitation helps to improve the quality of life,  as  well  as  the  dignity,  of  those  served.  MSF considers Water and Sanitation an integrated component of the medical humanitarian aid it provides, as  it  contributes  to  the  achievement  of  the  social  mission. Watsan is a crucial element to take into account in all missions, in all contexts.

This course is a basic introduction to the watsan technical family, that is a must for all logisticians. In this course will have a general overview of all the basic concepts regarding this family, including public health, vector control, and IPC.


Target

OCBA is considering basic WATSAN level 1 as a pre-requisite for all logisticians, in order to allow operational management team to plan properly activities.  But it must be compulsory for the following profiles:

  • Hospital facilities manager
  • Logistics coordinator assistant 
  • WATSAN supervisor
  • Base and facilities officer
  • WATSAN technician
  •  WATSAN Agent

This course will require 20 hours of commitment.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to: 

  • Explain the link between public health and WHS.
  • Estimate the needs for water and excrement management for healthcare structures and camps. 
  • Recognize the added value of the activities monitoring and request a proper technical support.
  • Explain the steps to install a small water network with MSF kits (motorized pump, bladder, distribution line).  
  • Explain the steps to perform batch chlorination.
  • Identify the most common systems for excreta management (defecation area, latrine pits, improved latrine pits, simple latrine, VIP, water latrine, septic tank). 
  • Identify the principles of water evacuation (grease trap, infiltration trenches). 
  • Explain the principles of hazardous medical waste management (categories & equipment) 
  • Explain the principles and impact of IPC and vector control activities.  
  • Recognize the added value of WATSAN and hygiene promotion activities in MSF's health strategy.
