About this course
This medical course provides essential knowledge on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), a significant issue affecting girls and women in many regions where MSF operates. It is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the expertise to identify, manage, and provide culturally sensitive, professional care to those affected.
Target audience
MSF medical staff involved in the care of girls and women who have undergone some form of FGM/C: midwives, nurses, doctors, counsellors/psychologists, HP/IEC staff, coordination positions (fieldco, medco, MTL).
Learning objectives
Upon completion, you will be able to:
- Define Female Genital Mutilation (FGM/C)
- Describe the structure and functions of the unaltered female genitalia
- Identify the different major types and subtypes of FGM/C as classified by the WHO
- List and identity the consequences and complications of FGM/C
- Manage and treat the different complications resulting from FGM/C
- Prevent and treat obstetrical complications in women living with FGM/C type III
- Explain medico-legal recommendations concerning the management of FGM/C
- Explain MSF policy concerning FGM/C
- Understand why and how to adopt a person-centred approach to communication and care in FGM/C consultations
