About this course
MSF FIELD SIMULATION offers different courses in TEMBO to learn about different modalities of simulation and its field application. These courses will allow you to hone your knowledge on how to plan, prepare, facilitate, and evaluate simulation activities with the aim to contributing to the improvement of SAFETY AND QUALITY of MSF's medical humanitarian efforts. We’ve organised them into the four following Learning Spaces within TEMBO, each of one contains different courses:
- Introduction to Simulation for Quality and Safety Care Improvement
- Simulation for Competence Training
- Simulation to Improve Real-World Processes, Plans, and Systems.
Management of a Simulation Program. IMPORTANT
The INTRODUCTION and FACILITATOR SKILLS courses included in the “Introduction to Simulation for Safety and Quality Care Improvement” space are compulsory to access this simulation learning space.
This simulation learning space, “Simulation for Competence Training,” includes five courses on how simulation is applied to DEVELOP and MAINTAIN key competencies among medical and non-medical staff.
- Zone 0
- Zone 1
- Low-Dose High-Frequency
- Zone 2
- Zone 3
Each course will explore the details of PREPARING, FACILITATING, and EVALUATING simulation activities. You will deepen your understanding of what it is and how to apply the Simzone framework related to competence development. Simulation zones for competence development range from acquiring purely technical skills to leadership and team performance skills.
REMEMBER: You have two options to learn about simulation:
Option 1: Create your own personalized learning pathway in simulation.
Option 2: Follow a certified learning pathway.
In this space of “Simulation for Competence Training” you can complete three different learning pathways by combining one or more of the courses:
- Pathway 1: Fundamental Skills Development (Zone o, Zone 1 and LDHF)
- Pathway 2: Complex and/or critical skills training (Zone 2)
- Pathway 3: Enhancing team performance (Zone 3)
Target audience
Health and logistical staff: nurses, doctors,
logisticians, watsans, medical or log managers, team leaders, Mobile Support
Technicians, technical referents, and specialists wishing to become clinical
simulation facilitators
Duration
There are five courses that address competence development according to the Simzone framework.
Each course in this space contains three main parts: theoretical content, practice, and design.
- The average duration for the first two parts (theoretical and practice) is about 3hours for each course.
- The third part of the design, which is optional, has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes in average for each course.
- At the end of the courses, you will find a tutorial on “how to read simulation scenario template” for each zone.
If you want to cover all the five courses, which is not compulsory, you will need a total of around 30 hours.
Learning objectives
The 5 courses are:
- Simulation Zone 0 course to build technical skills.
- Simulation Zone 1 course to learn protocols and algorithms.
- LOW DOSE HIGH FREQUENCY (LDHF) course to enhance and maintain technical competences.
- Simulation Zone 2 course to develop skills to manage critical and complex situations.
- Simulation Zone 3 course to develop leadership skills and improve team performance.
At the end of each course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the potential of the specific zone covered in each course.
- Recognise the structure and the signal and noise of the specific zone covered in each course.
- Recognise the facilitation, feedback, and debriefing techniques for the specific zone covered in each course.
Each course has an added unit on “How to read simulation scenario template“, and a complementary and optional unit about “Design.”
The Design unit will allow you to understand the DESIGN for zone 0, zone 1, zone 2, and zone 3. This specific part of DESIGN is optional, and participants will be able to:
- explain essential elements when designing new cases in each of the zones.
- recognize and properly define need analysis and objectives.
- identify core elements that trigger learning.
List of contents
For each simulation ZONE COURSE the content will be related to:
- Target objectives and participants.
- The specific noise and signal.
- The structure of the session.
- Scenario facilitation and specificities.
- The specific feedback and debriefing techniques.
- The design principles for the specific zone.
Methodology
E-learning modules with readings, videos, and practical exercises including feedback.
All simulation courses are designed for self-directed learning. So, we recommend that participants have paper and pen ready or open a new document write down their thoughts and ideas throughout the course.Evaluation
To obtain the badge for each course, learners must complete and submit all the content, practical activities, and a final short quiz with a minimum of 70% correct answers.
Certification
Each COURSE in the SIMULATION FOR COMPETENCE TRAINING SPACE is an autonomous learning unit that allows you to earn a THEORETICAL and a DESIGN BADGE.
- THEORY BADGE for each course: To obtain the theory badge, you must complete the online content of each of the courses and a short quiz at the end. This quiz can be repeated if the pass mark is not achieved on the first attempt (min 70% of correct answers).
- DESIGN BADGE for each course: To obtain the design badge, you must complete the design module in each one of the courses and a quiz at the end. This quiz can be repeated if the pass mark is not achieved on the first attempt (min 70% of correct answers).
In addition to the badges, a specific ONLINE ACHIEVEMENT CERTIFICATE can be obtained when following the certified pathways.. Go to Pathway Information Document for more information
Requirements/Pre-requisites
Access first to the “Introduction to Simulation for Safety and Quality Improvement” space and complete the courses INTRODUCTION and FACILITATORS SKILLS.
An adequate English level is essential to understand each of the courses (minimum B2).
An internet connection is recommended to ensure optimal content quality; however, the course has been designed to function offline as well.Enrolment
This space, with its courses, has self-enrolment access.
