Basics of context analysis

About the course

This self-learning course aims to give practical guidance in order to implement a basic context analysis at project level. 

It should be done at the beginning of a Learning path, that would continue with other topics for which context analysis is required, like: 

    • Security Management 
    • Negotiations 
    • Scenario Building 
    • Emergency Response 

The course is based in the module of Context Analysis in the OCBA Operations Manual and the pillar of Impact of crisis on the populations in the OCBA People Centered Approach Portal. 

 

Target audience

This course is directed at all MSF OCBA Field Coordinators and all staff that is on the way to get validated as one – it´s also available to anyone with interest in knowing more about this topic.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

    • Explain what context analysis is 
    • Identify which are the main categories of information required to analyze contexts 
    • For each category of information, identify which sources may provide the data 
    • Among the information collected, identify with your team which are the main factors that can pose a threat to the population 
    • Involve your field teams in identifying key elements that are determinant in the threats to population groups 
    • Involve your field teams to communicate in a very clear way what are the key elements in the context and why 
    • Identify the power actors and their relationships in an actor mapping 
    • Summarize the key elements in the context through the context summary

Methodology

Self-learning with videos and texts that explain the theory and illustrate with examples. Most of the materials can be downloadable to study and use offline. 

 

Evaluation

The course includes some quizzes, and some activities cannot be accessed without having done the previous ones. However, it pursues a basic knowledge, so no specific evaluation of learning at the end of the course has been set. Rather, participants will have to demonstrate they have this basic knowledge when they do more complex courses, like the one on Security Management or the FC-PMR course. 

 

Certification

At the end of the course, you will receive a badge. To achieve it, you must have completed all the modules’ activities.
