  4. Security and resource management in order to ensure quality medical programmes within an MSF mission
General Objective MMC

The MMC aims to improve the core competencies of a Medical Coordinator by strengthening their knowledge and skills in:

  1. MSF OCA vision, strategy and medical policies
  2. Networking + relationship building and advocacy + communication
  3. Leadership and people management within MSF-OCA
  4. Medical care management in order to ensure the quality of medical care provided in an MSF mission.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
You are in your first mission as a HoM, or you will be assigned to a HoM position within 6 months after this course, but you are already validated into the HoM pool. The Senior Management Training is a mandatory course for Heads of Mission on their first HoM assignment.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

  • Strategic Vision: the capacity to identify, articulate and communicate principles, ideas and priorities in order to channel efforts and resources towards the social mission of MSF. The ability to link day-to-day work with the long-term objectives to be achieved. 
  • Leadership: the capacity to persuade, inspire and mobilise people to contribute to MSF’s social mission, including the ability to make difficult, political and/or operational decisions even against popular opinion/will, and to explain clearly the reasons for them.
  • Network and building relationships: the ability to identify relevant actors in a given context, engaging, cultivating and maintaining relations with them according to the aims of the organisation. 
  • Cross-Cultural awareness: the capacity to acknowledge, respect and integrate cultural differences in a way that facilitates the achievement of MSF’s objectives. 
  • Analytical thinking: the ability to analyse a situation, its time sequences and cause–effect relationships, in order to set priorities based on rational judgment. 
  • Planning and Organizing: the ability to prioritise and set lines of action, optimising resources (material, human, financial, temporal, etc.), ensuring that anticipated results are obtained by means of efficient management of his/her own and colleagues’ work and that assigned responsibilities and functions are clear at all times. 
Specific competencies HoM to develop: 

  • Security Awareness and Management: the ability to identify factors that influence staff and project security and to anticipate the situations that may endanger MSF’s projects, staff, premises and image. The capacity to make decisions and the ability to define, establish and adhere to appropriate measures and regulations in accordance with MSF’s security management principles and MSF’s security policy.
  • Capacity to negotiate: the ability to convince and to reach acceptable agreements for all parties involved. 
Specific competency Medco to develop: 

Quality and Result Orientation: the drive and tenacity to achieve the defined objectives and to implement efficient solutions within a set timeframe, with the given resources and in accordance with the established procedures and models; the will to constantly seek improvement in the performance of his/her own tasks and actions.

TRAINING APPROACH 

This course is held together with the MMC and has joint modules with MedCos. MedCos and HoMs will work together on a case study throughout the course. The course has a self-paced learning element ahead of and during the course, and a two-week Face-to-Face component in the Netherlands.

DURATION OF THE COURSE
2 weeks
CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of the F2F part of the course, as well as 100% completion of the self-paced learning activities, the participants will receive a training certificate from OCA L&D.

Participants will receive a badge when completing the online course.

HOW TO ENROL

Only candidates who have been validated to be in the HOM/MEDCO pool will be invited to the SMT/MMC. For more information as to how to get validated for the pool, please contact your career or pool manager.

For all staff currently in mission at the time of application

For personal advice on your career and L&D possibilities, please contact your: Line Manager (Locally recruited staff) HRO/Career Manager (International mobile staff)If you want to apply for a course, discuss this with your Line Manager. They in turn will discuss with the HR Coordinator (HRCo). After initial approval in the mission, you should complete the online application form. After submitting your application via this form, make sure that the required recommendation letter is sent to Amsterdam.DevelopmentOfficer@amsterdam.msf.org Please, ask the person who needs to recommend you for this course (as stated in the course brochure or announcement per specific course), to write the recommendation letter. The L&D Manager or HRCO will then send this to Amsterdam.DevelopmentOfficer@amsterdam.msf.org 

For staff on international mobile staff in between missions at the time of application

For personal advice on your career and L&D possibilities, please contact your HRO/Career Manager. If you want to apply for a course, discuss this with your HRO/Career Manager who will discuss withthe OCA Pool Manager. Please. ask your Career Manager to write the recommendation for you for this course (as stated in the course brochure or announcement per specific course). Your Career Manager will send this to the Amsterdam.DevelopmentOfficer@amsterdam.msf.org
