MSF Governance Course

About the course

The MSF Governance was designed to help board members in MSF understand and exercise their governance role and responsibilities. The course consists of 3 modules; one on the general principles of governance, one on financial management and one on risk analysis. The module ‘Introduction to Financial Oversight in MSF’ discusses the basic principles of financial management, the financial architecture of the board and the role of boards in sound financial oversight. The module ‘Introduction to Governance in MSF’ introduces board members to the governance structure of MSF, the relationship between the board and the executive, and the role of the board in the wider MSF movement. The module "Introduction to Risk Analysis in MSF" goes into the topic of risk analysis and introduce board members to a variety of tools and methods to assess and manage risk.

Target audience

MSF Board members, or anyone else who is interested in the governance of MSF.

Evaluation

Participants are asked to answer a question in between each video.

Duration

30 Minutes per module, 60 minutes in total for the whole course.

Learning objectives

Introduction to Financial Oversight in MSF:

  • To identify the formal roles and responsibilities of an MSF board during the annual financial cycle;
  • To illustrate how to approach finances from a board oversight perspective;
  • To identify the main financial matters within MSF globally and the role boards play in movement-wide financial governance.

Introduction to Governance in MSF:

  • To recognize the principles of good governance and their relevance for board performance.
  • To understand the roles and responsibilities of your board in relation to the executive and the association.
  • To comprehend the international governance in MSF and the role of a national board in the international system.

Introduction to Risk Analysis in MSF:

  • To recognise what a risk is.
  • To name a few risks common to MSF.   
  • To have a basic understanding of the tools and concepts used at MSF.   
  • To understand how you as a board member can integrate risk management into your work .
