About the Course
Neonates are vulnerable and need specialised nursing care using a family-centred approach integrating parents into their care. Specialised nursing skills and considerations are required in neonatal care activities, handling of neonates and providing nursing interventions.
In this module we will discuss key neonatal nursing care topics such as neonatal personal hygiene, developmental supportive care, neonatal positioning, and pain management. We will also learn how to cluster care and manage the specific nursing needs of neonates. This module is based on the recommendations found in the MSF Neonatal Nursing Care Handbook.
Learning Objectives
By taking this module, you would be able to:
- Identify key neonatal developmental supportive care. Creating suitable environment for neonates,
- Manage neonatal personal hygiene (eye care, nose care, etc.),
- Perform Skin Assessment and Prevention of Skin Lesions (use of adhesive),
- Use Neonatal Positioning Assessment Tool (IPAT),
- Identify and manage pain in newborns,
- Highlight the important key nursing documentation.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The module is intended for nurses, midwives, clinical officers and medical doctors caring for newborns in MSF projects.
DURATION
Approximately 60 minutes
ENROLMENT
To access this eLearning module, you need first to enrol in the Newborn Care Learning Hub then select the Nursing Care module and enter the enrolment key.
EVALUATION
To pass this course learners will have to download the job aid, complete the theory and answer the 3 cases studies. They will then have access to the final quiz which they will have to answer with 80% correct answers.
CERTIFICATION
After completing the module and answering the final quiz with at least 80% correct responses learners are entitled a Tembo completion badge and a certificate.
METHODOLOGY
We recommend printing out the job aid and using the neonatal guideline during the module.
