Interpersonal Communication Skills for Medical Staff

About the Course

This course will explore communication skills for medical and paramedical staff. It is an on-line e-learning self-paced course by OCBA medical department. The course is in English. The aim of the course is to improve how we communicate with patients and families. The course will provide guidance on what to do and what to avoid when communicating, explore key communication skills and provide some tips for communicating with children, survivors of violence and at end of life. The course is aimed at medical and paramedical staff.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is for all medical and paramedical staff who wish to improve the way they communicate with patients and families, including doctors, clinical officers, nurses, nurse assistants, psychologists, counsellors, social workers and physiotherapists.

DURATION  

This course should take approximately 90 minutes to complete.

METHODOLOGY

Self-paced online course.

EVALUATION

To pass this course learners will have to do three quizzes

CERTIFICATION

After successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate and a digital badge awarded by MSF OCBA.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to explain what communication is and why it is important, outline some key rules for good communication and describe and use the following communication skills: active listening, use of silence, responding with empathy, exploring, paraphrasing and sumarising, ask tell ask and communicating bad news using SPIKES model. Participants will be able to apply some key tips and phrases for communicating with children, survivors of violence and at end of life.
