Become a Mini-Lab Technician (eBMLT)
About the course

Antibiotic resistance is a major problem throughout the world and more specifically in resource-limited countries. MSF as a health actor in these countries decided to develop a simplified clinical bacteriology laboratory (Mini-Lab) adapted to low-resource settings in order to identify bacteria causing infection, determine their sensitivity to antibiotics, improve the quality of care and surveillance of antibiotic resistance while detecting the emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

The main objective of this training is to enable Mini-Lab users to understand how the laboratory works and which techniques to use to obtain quality analyses.

This e-learning is the first part of a multimodal training course. It is available at any time on Tembo.

As a first step, it should be seen before a face-to-face training session, which will then allow to focus on the technical aspects of the manipulations in the laboratory.

Afterwards, this e-learning will always be accessible to Mini-Lab users: if they are not sure about a procedure or a gesture, they will be able to easily review the actions to be performed.

Duration

15h

Target audience

This course is mainly for future users of the Mini-Labs in the 5 MSF sections:

  • In case field staff replacement (lab technician), if it is not possible to send a trainer.
  • As a pre-requisite for the training of a future Mini-Lab implementer.
  • This e-learning is also available to anyone who wants to learn more about the Mini-Lab.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the objectives and use of the Mini-Lab
  • Describe the basic principles of bacteriology
  • Explain the basic principles of antimicrobial resistance
  • Find the documents and materials necessary for the proper functioning of the laboratory
  • Apply good laboratory practices and safety rules
  • Analyze samples and deliver the results
  • Use the Mini-LIMS laboratory information system
  • Use and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Control the quality of the analytical process
  • Manage stocks of consumables and reagents
