About this course
Methanol poisoning is a neglected health crisis that receives little attention globally. Thousands are poisoned yearly, often in outbreaks affecting vulnerable and poor communities. This e-learning self-paced course by the Methanol Poisoning initiative (MPi), MSF Hong Kong, and Oslo University Hospital will provide you with comprehensive information, skills and resources to understand methanol poisoning, its diagnosis and treatment in both regular and outbreak situations. It is aimed at medical, paramedical and other healthcare professionals who may be involved in identifying, diagnosing, treating and/or managing patients of methanol poisoning within MSF, MoH and other health organisations.
Target audience
This course is for medical, paramedical and other healthcare professionals who may be involved in identifying, diagnosing, treating and/or managing patients of methanol poisoning in MSF, MoH and other health organizations, e.g., Poison Control Centers, Medical Associations, Toxicology Societies, Medical NGOs, Universities/Medical students, etc.
Duration
Participants are expected to commit an estimated 4h of their time to complete the course.
Learning objectives
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- explain how methanol poisoning becomes a problem
- identify how methanol poisoning becomes toxic to the body
- diagnose methanol poisoning based on available equipment
- treat methanol poisoning based on available treatment options
- rate different prognostic markers for decision making
- plan for emergency preparedness and response to outbreaks of methanol poisoning
- evaluate how to interpret blood gases for the diagnosis of methanol poisoning

Methodology
Throughout this course, you will be tasked with quizzes and presented with case studies featuring different patients and scenarios. In these scenarios, you will be required to make decisions regarding their diagnosis, treatment, and overall management.
Evaluation
To pass this course, learners will have to complete modules 1 to 5 (module 6 is optional), and all quizzes and assessments that are part of the modules.
Certification
After successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate and a digital badge awarded by MSF.
