About the Course
This Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course is an educational programme designed to enhance cognitive and procedural skills of health care professionals to help them manage obstetrical emergencies. The Blended ALSO course is comprised of self-paced eLearning modules on Tembo, meant as pre-reading for the face-to-face course in the field. The field course will be comprised of lectures, case studies and practical workstations and will end in an exam and certification. This course is offered in English to midwives, nurses, medical doctors, gynaecologist etc. from OCB projects.
Target Audience
The target audience for this course is midwives, nurses, medical doctors, gynaecologists, etc. from OCB projects, working primarily in the maternity ward and managing deliveries.
Duration
The pre-reading modules on Tembo has the length of 16 hours. It requires enrolment and will be accessible for learners to the field ALSO app. 6 weeks before course beginning. It will be accompanied by the ALSO addendum, the 100-page syllabus that the TEMBO pre-reading is based on. The field ALSO has the duration of 4-5 days and is planned with the Sexual and Reproductive Team in OCB.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, learners will be better equipped to manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies in an organized and team-focused way. The learner will know ALSO mnemonics (memo-technical tools) and the MSF obstetric protocols attached to this. The learner will have practised evidence-based hands-on techniques on mannequins and will incorporate this into their daily practice going forward.

Methodology
During the Face-to-Face course, the learner will participate in lectures, apply learning in case discussions, and practice emergency obstetric care protocols in workstations using mannequins, finishing with an exam that contains multiple-choice test and practical demonstration.
Evaluation
To pass the course, the learner must have been present during all days of the Face-to-Face course and complete an exam by multiple-choice test and practical demonstration.
Certification
Upon course completion and passing of the exam, the learner will receive the ALSO Provider certification as well as a TEMBO Blended ALSO Badge awarded by OCB.
Requirements/Prerequisites
The learner must currently work in an MSF maternity as locally hired staff. Furthermore, the learner must have English language skills on a level that makes them capable of following the course and read/follow the Self-paced E-learning modules. Lastly, the learner must have a TEMBO learner profile and IT skills and equipment to be able to do the self-paced E-learning.
Enrolment
The Field ALSO is agreed with the SRH Unit in OCB and the medical responsible on the project and the project will arrange the list of learners according to learning needs.
When the learner is accepted to the field ALSO and has created a TEMBO profile, the self-paced E-learning modules will be opened to the learner app. 6 weeks before the course.
Release and Update
This course is released in April 2024 and will be updated yearly or when the ALSO Addendum is revised.
OC Validation
The self-paced eLearning is validated by OCB. The field ALSO course and the addendum are validated by all OC’s for designated staff.
Technical Considerations
The self-paced eLearning is available for computer, laptop, telephone and tablet. Links to videos in the modules requires good internet access and cannot be viewed offline.
