Sexual Violence Children and Adolescents

About the Course

Sexual violence requires specific humanitarian approaches based on an adequate, adapted and comprehensive prevention and assistance response in order to save lives, alleviate suffering and maximize protection. By essence the issue can only be addressed through a multidisciplinary and systemic approach.

Before taking this course, we HIGHLY recommend doing the e-SV course first.  This course assumes an understanding of the principles of survivor centred care for survivors, an understanding of community assessment, MSF medical protocol and the medical certificate, and psychosocial care for survivors, as well as an introduction to data collection and health promotion that are all presented in s-SV .

The overall objective is to enable the setup of multidisciplinary activities to address sexual violence focus in Children and Adolescents in MSF projects, including legal and security aspects.

The training will be focus in Survivor- centered principles for children & adolescents

Target group:

·                Medical (all profiles) and non-medical (FC-HoM-HAO) profiles with interest in Sexual Violence care

·                First mission or experienced staff

·                Adequate English level is required

·                Open to international and national MSF staff

This course is organized in 7 Modules. Once you have completed all self learning activities and finished the quiz you will find in the last module you will receive the certificate and the Badge of the course.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • General definition of SV on minors and adolescent
  • Define the many types  of sexual violence perpetrated against children and adolescents and their prevalence in global contexts
  • Recognize risk factors for and methods of identifying child and adolescent survivors of sexual violence
  • Adapt MSF medical care and medical protocol for child and adolescent survivors of sexual violence, including focus on specific issues regarding the medical certificate
  • Identify the process of psychosocial care for child and adolescent survivors of sexual violence as well as their caregivers including methods that are child appropriate.
  • Define medical-legal and protection aspects critical for MSF staff when working with child and adolescent survivors of sexual violence
  • Explore community engagement, health promotion, and prevention methods targetting sexual violence against children and adolescents
  • Specificities of SV in boys, ideas of masculinity


List of Contents

This course has a scope of the problem (worldwide and per region)  or problem based learning approach in which the participants will have to produce certain outcomes related to a sexual violence case or context. 

Each module contains a different case study that participants will utilize and follow throughout that module also includes videos, quizzes and interactional activities.
